For a homeowner in her 40s who works nearby in the CBD, this Icon Residence apartment was conceived as a home she would be happy to spend more time in. The design team at Crumbs Interior shares that she has always enjoyed staying in. They add, “She wanted a bright interior anchored by light wood tones and subtle Scandinavian influences, while still allowing us to thoughtfully integrate furniture she already owned.”

That approach has been extended to the open living and dining area, where a pendant light from the homeowner’s previous place adds a familiar touch. The piece was kept as it complemented the updated palette, lending continuity to the space.

In the open-plan zones, the kitchen island serves as both a functional work surface and a design feature. The designers say, “Behind the island, we created a feature wall finished in wallpaper from Hello Circus to give the homeowner a dedicated spot for display, while mosaic cladding at the base of the island adds a subtle layer of texture.”

Nearby, a door with fluted panels discreetly conceals the household shelter, minimising visual clutter. Its linear detailing echoes the light wood palette, allowing the practical feature to sit comfortably alongside the home’s green-accented wall feature.

The team retained the existing marble flooring in the living area and kitchen, along with the bedroom parquet, making only minimal layout adjustments. With the marble anchoring the interiors, decorative wall mouldings introduce quiet elegance and subtle depth.

The former kitchen yard saw one of the most significant transformations, reworked into a compact yet highly functional laundry zone. To make the most of its long, narrow footprint, the designers integrated a customised sink above the washing machine for easier clean-ups. Peranakan-inspired floor tiles, green wall tiles and brass fittings complete the space, bringing character to the compact utility area.

Beyond the hardworking kitchen and laundry spaces, the bedroom offers a quieter contrast. Soft neutrals and cosy wood tones set a restful tone, with leaf-patterned wallpaper adding interest behind the bed. Full-height wardrobes with sleek-looking EDL laminates keep the room neat, while the retained parquet flooring gives the space a warm, lived-in feel.

Green subway tiles laid in different styles give the common and master bathrooms distinct identities, while French doors to the master bathroom add a posh, hotel-like touch. Finished in a restrained palette, both spaces feel fresh and welcoming, adding a quiet sense of luxury to daily routines.

Completed at a renovation cost of $78,000, the apartment reflects a thoughtful balance of practicality and personal touches, resulting in a comfortable home the owner is happy to return to each day.
