New York loft style in an HDB flat

For the homeowners, a young couple who describe themselves as extroverted and daring, their first home together was never planned to be like any other. Their plan was for an industrial-style home, but one that also pushes the boundaries of the new four-room HDB flat with a gallery-inspired concept; much like a New York loft.

The 1,001sqft home comes with three bedrooms, but the designer combined two of them to form one large space. “Since it’s a two-person household, the bedroom is mainly for sleeping. We created a two-in-one entertaining and working space out of the two spare bedrooms,” designer Joanna Ng of Lux Design explains.

The space planning suits the couple perfectly as they love to gather with friends and family. “While the space serves as a workroom on weekdays, it also functions as an entertainment room that is big enough to cater for leisure mahjong. A movable dining table easily transforms into a card game table,” Joanna adds. Half height glass windows and double doors enclose this space while lending a spacious, airy vibe. A statement-making custom light fixture with exposed bulbs and a tubular frame dresses the space and completes the New York loft industrial vibe.

Outside the entertainment space, there is also a living area and an open-concept kitchen. The couple opted for epoxy-coated concrete flooring and textured walls throughout. In the living area, the wall is treated with rusty effect wall paint. The reddish streaks stand out from the black walls throughout the space.

With plans to have an island, the couple chose to work around the space constraints by making the island multi-functional. It serves as a bar counter, a dining area and a food preparation space. Tucked into the island is a movable dining table that can be pulled out for use. The designer also made full use of space by hanging a ceiling-mounted rack above the island. Here, too, a trio of exposed bulbs illuminates the space when needed.

Lastly, the bedroom is dedicated entirely to rest. And for that, the designer split the master bedroom into two areas by removing the bedroom door. The bed area can be closed off with sliding doors, while the mirror-clad walk-in wardrobe can be accessed by one half of the couple without interrupting the other.

A long passageway, filled with artworks, leads to the walk-in wardrobe. Overall, Joanna created a visually rich space that suits the couple’s lifestyle and personalities, and gives the impression that they are living in a New York loft.
