Follow the curves in this elegant Hong Kong apartment

Architectural curves inform the design of this spacious and luxurious Hong Kong abode.

Home Type: 3-bedroom apartment

Floor Area: 1,940sqft

Hong Kong is known for its tiny apartments, which makes this 1,940-square-foot abode quite the luxury. It’s also unique for its curved architecture.

Capitalising on both its space and curves, and inspired by the shape of the homeowners’ grand piano, COMODO Interior Design has built a warm, light-filled and elegant home and filled it with smooth, rounded features.

Curves can be found on the ceiling, carpentry and furniture and, together with the light timber tones, form the main design language. The design also maximises functionality. The large and free-flowing communal area accommodates a semi-open study, which has a glass window insertion for natural light penetration and greater transparency. And even with the grand piano and furniture, there is ample room for movement and for the kids to play.

The original curved windows in the living area bring in the view and plenty of natural light. Everywhere else, lighting is used to create a warm and atmospheric home, from the LED lighting around the ceiling perimeter of the common areas, to the warmly lit marble feature in the living room. Patterns and textures enrich the spaces elegantly, without overpowering.

The study follows the same design language, which is important given its visual connection to the common areas. The most eye-catching feature here is the diagonal dark walnut bookcase, which can even be admired from the dining and living areas.

Curves continue to feature prominently in the master bedroom. The curved bedhead lends greater privacy and intimacy to the sleeping area, while the dressing area features sophisticated, curved details. While unseen, the designers have also accommodated a walk-in wardrobe near bedroom entrance, and strategic lighting placements ensure that the space feels relaxed and inviting.

Even though part of the original master bathroom has been incorporated into a newly formed walk-in closet, it’s still a luxurious space with no expense spared. Marble cladding on counter, walls and ceiling frames this his and her washing up area, and makes it the centre of focus.

Even their bathroom makes a bold departure from the rest of the apartment with its fun pairing of colourful terrazzo surfaces and hexagonal tiles.

The children’s bedroom is a youthful and playful space designed to nurture the imagination and encourage exploration.

All in all, this is an elegant yet highly-functional family home where connection and intimacy are held in equal balance. Distinctive design details also make for a standout apartment.
