Casa of Curiosities is a 1,098-square-foot apartment redesigned by Claire Goh and Shawn Tjoa of Studio Luuseed for homeowners who enjoy travelling, cook frequently at home, and maintain an active, routine-driven lifestyle. Their brief was specific yet open-ended: a bright, cosy home shaped through colour, with a curved wall to soften the interior, a larger kitchen for regular cooking, and bathrooms designed for both daily use and guests.

Rather than defaulting to a fully open plan, Studio Luuseed took a more measured approach to the layout. “The brief was addressed through compact yet efficient spatial planning, allowing the home to feel more generous than its actual footprint,” the designers explain.

Before the renovation, a direct line of sight from the entrance corridor led straight into the bedrooms — an arrangement that felt abrupt spatially and less than ideal from a feng shui perspective. This became the key point of intervention where the designers introduced a curved feature wall clad in non-rectified emerald green tiles, positioned just beyond the entry. Acting as both spatial filter and visual anchor, it softens the arrival sequence while introducing privacy. A small opening carved into the curve maintains a degree of visual connection across the home, creating a layered sense of depth rather than full exposure.

Positioned behind this wall is a peninsular counter that extends the kitchen’s functionality. Used as a breakfast corner, pantry and additional prep surface, it supports the homeowners’ cooking habits while relieving pressure on the main kitchen.

The kitchen itself underwent a significant transformation. Previously enclosed, with a narrow entrance and limited natural light, it was opened up by widening the entry and extending the layout to incorporate a breakfast nook and clearer circulation. A fluted glass telescopic sliding door allows the space to be closed off during heavier cooking while preserving light penetration and visual continuity. It now supports both everyday cooking and social moments with ease.

Importantly, not everything was replaced. Much of the existing marble flooring in the living area and parquet flooring in the bedrooms was retained. “We believe in working with existing quality materials where the conditions permit,” the designers note — a principle that also informed the repurposing of salvaged marble tiles to form a custom threshold at the relocated entrance to a common bedroom, ensuring continuity along the corridor.

Throughout the apartment, colour and texture are applied with a confident, expert hand. The living and dining area features a long, tile-cladded bay window reimagined as built-in seating, display ledge and indoor plant corner. In the master bedroom, a custom bedhead integrates cantilevered red drawers and functional ledges, paired with half-moon wardrobe handles that add a note of play without disrupting cohesion. The bathrooms are similarly considered: the master bath offers a calm, tactile experience through Sukabumi stone, while the common bathroom embraces cheerful mosaics and small, expressive details.

Named Casa of Curiosities to reflect a home shaped by moments of discovery, the project resists instant readings. Instead, it reveals itself gradually — through movement, routine and use — offering a clear demonstration of how colour, curves and thoughtful retention can work together to shape a home grounded in daily life.
