A lot has happened this year with the Lookbox Design Awards 2019 being our biggest celebration. Christmas has also come and gone, and it’s only two more days before we welcome a brand new year.

Let’s give 2019 the last hurrah and take a look at your favourite homes of 2019!

#1 Japanese way of living in an HDB flat

Bearing a modern, Zen-like aesthetic, this HDB flat designed by D5 Studio Image is a quiet repose adapted for a young couple who embraces the minimalist Japanese lifestyle. Furnishings are kept simple with wood as the dominant material palette.

#2 Peranakan meets industrial in this small bachelorette apartment

Who says small can’t be beautiful? AMP Design Co. proves that style and function can be had even in a 700sqft apartment. Other than taking on an eclectic style combining Peranakan and industrial-inspired design accents, the design studio was also tasked with creating a good amount of amenities and storage out of this space-challenged apartment.

#3 Modern Moroccan style done right in an HDB flat

Like a rich piece of tapestry, Fatema Design Studio weaved in masses of textures and captivating patterns into this family home for four. The designers worked in incredible depth and warmth with contrasting layers of modernity and elaborate Moorish-inspired accents. Other than the decorative elements, they first focused on creating an open-concept setting for the living, dining and kitchen zones.

#4 An HDB flat now a modern contemporary haven

Endowed with full creative control, Fineline Design turned this plain-vanilla BTO unit into a modern contemporary haven for a pair of newly-weds. The couple had no major requests, except for a dark colour palette to anchor the interiors and bring warmth to the home. To that end, the designers introduced dark wood laminates, black quartz surfaces and grey fabrics to each room in the house.

#5 An HDB flat with Japanese design sensibilities

Having just moved back to Singapore after ten years in Japan, this family wanted a home that would allow them to retain their Japanese way of life while adapting to the tropical locale. Chark Private Limited (the interior arm of Chalk Architects) opened up the plan of the five-room HDB flat to create a porous, flexible home as the first step to making the most out of a modest space. Where possible, walls were removed, and screens and sliding doors employed.
