Some of our favourite highlights at this year’s International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS)

Text by LookboxLiving 15 March 2017

From a house made of strips of paper to a Virtual Reality tour, these are our highlights from the International Fair Festival Singapore (IFFS 2017).

We were on the grounds of the International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS) that took place from 9 to 12 March 2017 at the Singapore Expo. The international-level show brought a total of 428 exhibiting companies from 35 countries, all coming together to showcase the best in furniture design. This year, IFFS broke new grounds with quality content that was presented in novel ways, making us even more excited for what future iterations might hold. We spent the day traversing the halls of IFFS 2017, and these are our highlights.
The White House piazza
IFFS-2017_IMG_6468 IFFS-2017_MLS11176 Smack in the middle of the exhibition halls is a show-stopping piazza known as The White House. Designed and curated by award-winning, multi-disciplinary designer Nathan Yong, this feature area includes a cafe, a seminar area and a meeting space. Instead of walls, The White House was made from billowing strips of white paper, forming ethereal walls that rustle with the movement of people walking past – and through – the “partitions”. This was also the location for the opening ceremony, press conference and designer talks that were held over the four-day period.
A virtual reality experience
IFFS-2017_MLS11147 One of the most exciting innovations during IFFS 2017 was the introduction of virtual reality technology to the show floor. Visitors had the opportunity to immerse themselves in Virtual Reality at the showrooms of Commune, Danovel, Resource Decor and Sam & Sara. We’re excited to see the fair integrating digital technology, forecasting how we as homeowners will experience interior design in the near future!
The Italian Hospitality showcase
IFFS-2017_MLS11130 One of this year’s special guests was renowned Italian designer Giulio Cappellini. He was in town to curate and present The Italian Hospitality showcase at IFFS, an elegant space that emulated a hotel suite, complete with bedroom, bathroom and library.
Design STARS Showcase
IFFS-2017_Rising-Stars_20170309_134015 IFFS-2017_D4S_4866 One of our favourite exhibits at each IFFS has always been the Design STARS Showcase. 10 up-and-coming global talents had the opportunity to display their collection in Singapore. Products range from feline-friendly furniture from Singaporean Celine Ng (Fraction Design Studio) and quirky kids’ furniture from Le Tan Minh (Vietnam-based Doowood).
New reasons to Play
IFFS-2017_PlayPlay-2 IFFS has become one of the go-to places to launch new furniture collections, and the buzz this year around the collaboration between Journey East and Lanzavecchia + Wai. The extension to the free-spirited PLAYplay collection introduces six more fun furniture pieces, including a sofa and console tables. Stay tuned as we’ll be featuring more about this exciting new collection.
Launching aircraft-inspired furniture
IFFS-2017_OM_Strata_Gal-Tevet Entune Living also launched its new Strata Collection, a series of drawers and chests. What’s most unique about this collection are the details, which have been inspired by the silhouette of an aircraft’s wing span. You can see this subtle influence in the design of the handles.   Read up more about IFFS 2017, and see you there next year!
