The Danish term hygge – defined as the quality of warmth, cosiness and the contentment that’s evoked by simple comforts – is a compelling concept and lifestyle that continues to be embraced around the world.
When it comes to the hygge experience, Danish furniture brand Muuto (now carried at XTRA) is a great place to start, and here’s our pick of five of its designs to get you started.

Reminisce of the classic Scandinavian design sofas of the 1960s, the Outline Sofa offers a new perspective, fusing the ideals of simplicity and function into one. Taking its name from its strong ‘outline’ of a sofa, the Outline series is clean and elegant on the outside with a deep seat and soft cushioning on its inside. Its design will not only complement one’s home surroundings but also entice one to spend hours on end in it.

Apartments are getting smaller, and so it’s well-worth noting that this chair doesn’t take up much space, while providing a focal point in a room thanks to its simple and refined expression. With its unique curved back, wooden armrest covers and slightly curved seat, it is a must-have for anyone who enjoys lounging with a drink and engaging in conversation. It is also EU Ecolabel Certified.

Choosing a light fixture like this Strand Pendant Lamp is the easiest way to achieve the ideal hygge atmosphere. The lamp is made in a sprayed cocoon material that results in a complex and intriguing structure. And when given its modern form, it then takes on an almost cloud-like appearance. “The Kink Vase – named for the two sharp bends that create its suggestive, humanoid form – was an experiment in combining digital and analogue processes,” explains Rachel Griffin, founder of Earnest Studio, on the inspiration. With its characterful ‘kink’ design, this porcelain creation brings a contemporary form to the archetypical flower vase, while adding a sculptural sentiment to the room, even when not in use.

This sculptural yet distinctly ergonomic armchair has a surprising fact: Its interior shell is made of 100 per cent recycled plastic (from post-consumer waste) and is then clad with soft wadding and upholstery to give a supreme sense of ease and embrace.
