Konstantin Grcic has once again collaborated with Magis to release a series of sheet steel cabinets called Chess at Milan Design Week 2018. Two years ago, this partnership led to the industrial Brut collection of tables, upholstered chairs and sofas.
The idea for this new collection came by observing an Italian company that produces industrial sheet steel cabinets in high volume. It made them wonder if can they take cabinets through some form of intervention and make them more domestic.
Together, they made edits to an industrial product and created a refined design object. Their intervention was more about eliminating certain things from the process. They infused it with colour and added one element – an oak handle and pedestal that softened the design and brought it warmth.
“It’s a design process of refining an existing product, making subtle interventions. It’s a complicated process, and it’s as demanding as designing something from scratch,” admits Konstantin.
The cabinets come in varying lengths and sizes in either dark red or white. One can also choose to include drawers or sliding doors.
