A sprawling bungalow in the heart of Singapore was to become the new home of an expatriate family whose interests surround fine art and philanthropy, among other things. The main objective of the interior designer from Mofasis was to furnish the home and have ready it for the move-in. At the same time, he had to ensure that the design and furniture selection are in line with the owner’s lifestyle.

Achieving a modern and warm Art Deco ambience became the main design direction. The conservation colonial house was given a rear extension wing that houses a converted gym that opens up to the pool. The owner wanted to showcase his art collection, which includes works by Anish Kapoor and Marc Chagall, and so, fine-crafted furniture was preferred.

The furniture selection was the crux of this project and presented the largest challenge due to time constraints. The artisanal furniture was to be imported from Europe, and it would typically take an average of four months to arrive in Singapore. However, a 10-week timeframe meant that the designers were limited to only ex-stock items that are already in Singapore. After a painstaking search, an ensemble of fine European pieces was carefully curated and further complemented by items imported from nearby countries like Japan and Indonesia.
