Being the directors of interior design firm Project File

The directors of design firm Project File realise that when it comes to designing their own home, their experience and expertise can be both a hindrance and a boon.

Alan Choo and Kelly Chong have decades of combined experience when it comes to designing homes, showflats and retail stores. The married couple are the two directors of interior design firm Project File, and are no strangers to constructing functional interiors that are loaded with personalised design elements. But despite the amount of experience they have, nothing could prepare them for the complications of designing their own home.

The first problem Alan and Kelly faced was choosing a single design concept – a formidable challenge considering the couple has worked on a wide and varied range of interior designs. To make matters more complicated, the married couple will also be staying with two other family members whose needs and preferences also had to be considered. “I drew out a lot of different concepts, but at the end of the day, we finally decided on a modern hotel feel. It’s clean, neat, very contemporary and everyone can appreciate its beauty. At the same time, we added a lot of wood into the home to make it feel more homely and less like an anonymous hotel room.”

The colour scheme (white, taupe, brown and grey) and material palette (polished floors, tinted mirrors, and lots of wood) came naturally and was further accentuated by Alan’s penchant for using lines to visually draw the eyes towards specific focal points. They also understood the importance of fitting out a room with just the right amount of joinery and how to create storage where storage is needed. The results can be seen in the home, from the cupboards that line the corridor leading into the bedrooms, to the built-in desk in the brother’s bedroom, to the walk-in wardrobe in the master bedroom.

It isn’t just the spatial planning that gives this home its professional sheen. Alan and Kelly also paid special attention to how they dressed up the home. “The choice of furniture can be as important as designing the home itself. No matter how well a house is done it won’t look good if we dress it up with the wrong type of furniture,” says Alan. “Kelly and I got our furniture from trustworthy shops. They may be slightly more expensive but we knew we were paying for quality. A good piece of furniture can really elevate the look of a home.”
