In the quiet and family-friendly neighbourhood of Serangoon North, a four-room resale flat needed a renovation to suit the laid-back nature of homeowner Felina and her household. Not to mention, the owner is an avid cook and therefore requested a large, functional kitchen that could accommodate family interaction and to entertain.
The original layout of the kitchen was largely retained. As lead designers Max Lee and Chan Yimin from Icon Interior explains: “The kitchen had to be meticulously designed with functionality and convenience in mind, incorporating several key features that elevate both its practicality and style.”
One standout element is the pot filler positioned conveniently above the stovetop, making it easier than ever to fill large pots with water without the need to carry them across the kitchen. The hob has also been thoughtfully placed at an adjusted height, designed to optimise ergonomics and ensure a comfortable cooking experience.
A stone’s throw away, the designers have created a pantry area with built-in shelving units and smart storage systems. This pantry features a striking backsplash made from custom subway tiles, creating a dramatic yet sophisticated visual statement.
A new rounded island was then placed at the centre to ensure a smooth transition between the spaces. The design welcomes people to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee together before heading out of the house.
Past the dining area, the living area has been tailored for lounging and relaxation. To achieve this, the designers used warm wood tones and a soft, neutral colour palette. Here, another curvy design makes its appearance in the form of a concave wall that defines the main entrance.
Another interesting feature of the home is the concealed master bedroom door between the kitchen and dining area. “It helps to make the home feel interconnected but distinct,” says Max and Yimin. Within this inner sanctum is a spacious, inviting layout with designated areas for both rest and work. A built-in settee area near the window offers a cosy spot to unwind and enjoy the natural light, with soft cushions and a built-in bench that seamlessly integrates with the room’s design.
To tackle the small bathroom situation, the designers have reworked the layout to ensure the room feels open and airy by incorporating space-saving solutions that make the most of every inch. For example, a clear glass shower screen is built to make the space feel larger by removing visual barriers, while wall-mounted shelving and recessed niches provide additional storage for towels and toiletries, eliminating the need for bulky cabinets and keeping the space organised.
Ultimately, the design of this home is best described as a harmonious blend of warmth and functionality, brought to life by Icon Interior’s cohesive use of wood tones and flowing curves throughout.
