A zen-like spatial quality envelopes this semi-detached house. Despite its large floor area, there is little desire to crowd the home with furniture or things that are not purposeful. Having just returned from the UK after residing there for some time, the young family wanted a comfortable and sensible home to live in, to spend quality time with their family and friends.
Fulfilling the owners’ desire to host family and friends at home, the layout of the house was altered to create a spacious entertainment space with only necessary furnishings, epitomising a less is more philosophy. Behind the television, a feature wall with soft lighting conceals ample storage, hiding away clutter to focus the eye on generous views of greenery enabled by large folding doors.
A multifunctional island sits parallel to the sofa, ideal for meal preparations or chatting with friends while appreciating a tipple or two. Folding doors open up to green grass and the outdoors, perfect for barbecue evenings or alfresco meals. The house, devoid of unnecessary embellishments, gives space to more important things – good company and great conversations.
The master bedroom, more generously detailed, features a floor-to-ceiling cushioned headboard that conceals a projector. Sheer curtains, lush grey fabrics and dark walnut wood layer the open and airy room where clothes, shoes and bags are hidden from sight in the walk-in wardrobe behind the bed.
The walk-in wardrobe is practical and spacious, and is conveniently positioned by the path leading to the bathroom. The Orange Cube took into consideration the need for a flexible wardrobe that can accommodate changes. In place of racks are open shelves that contain anything, be it folded clothes, handbags or accessories. Big mirrors emphasise the depth of space, widening the area visually.
The master bathroom is outfitted with a long sink counter and a sculptural bathtub for relaxing days, while large homogeneous tiles with subtle marble lines cover the walls and floors. A clever ‘window’ by the toilet bowl enables the placement of scented candles, plants or decorative objects. His and her sinks were built with storage underneath to contain towels or other bathroom needs.
