Home Type: 4-room HDB flat
Floor Area: 1,000sqft
The owners of this four-room flat are a young couple. The husband works shift jobs and enjoys relaxing at home, while the wife is a pre-school teacher with a creative eye. They were both looking for a hassle-free renovation and left everything in the good hands of the interior designers at Ascend Design.
Jasper Goh, the studio’s Principal Designer, says: “As clients, the couple were amazing to work with and were very open to suggestions and ideas. In terms of a brief, however, they did have several specific requests. The husband wanted the space to have luxurious details, while the wife wanted colours and eclectic touches.”
Done at a renovation cost of $100,000, the flat has been completely reconfigured based on the couple’s desire for a larger living area and master bedroom, and their need for a separate wardrobe area to minimise disturbances since the husband does shift work and runs on a different schedule. “We broke down almost all the walls and reconstructed the three bedrooms into a one bedder with a walk-in wardrobe,” says Jasper.
The materials and shades chosen for the home, such as coloured marble and rose gold finishes, imbue the space with a sense of luxury and elegance. Furnishings and fixtures, including the dining table, doors, and even the drapes, are custom designed and one of a kind, and make a statement within the minimalist interior. The designers have also incorporated patterns and shapes subtly, so they complement the soothing scheme of browns, creams and whites and bring touches of personality to the home.
Also of note are the special application of surface treatments. Jasper says: “We could not find a tile in the size we wanted for the foyer, and so we decided to cut them to size. And in the master bathroom, we were able to fit in 2.4-metre-high travertine tiles, thus keeping grout lines to a minimum.”
There’s nothing cookie cutter about the design of this home. Every area has been well crafted, and thoughtful and bespoke touches abound.
