“I’ve been obsessed with design all my life,” says architect and furniture designer Gal Tevet. “Every little thing I do, whether it’s writing, designing or composing music, I end up obsessing over.” This drive has served the Tel Aviv-based designer well as one of the main creative forces behind furniture manufacturer Entune Living.

Gal Tevet - Leaf Nest of Tables

“At Entune Living, we design furniture pieces that are naturally functional but at the same time, looks good in any environment. I’m obsessed with making sure that the furniture can exist as a piece of art but they can still serve their function as well-made furniture.” Gal’s latest work for Entune Living is the Leaf collection. It comprises of everyday modern furniture including coffee tables, sideboards and bookshelves.

What makes the furniture in the Leaf collection so unique, Gal points out, is the use of “structure and depth”. Each furniture piece has a very slim profile and the legs, walls and surfaces are deceptively wiry. But a closer look shows that each piece of wood has a different thickness. Take the Leaf table for example. The edges of the table are as “thin as possible” but it gently slopes to a thicker width towards the centre. This rolling design appears in every piece of furniture in Gal’s Leaf collection. When asked for the inspiration behind these furniture designs, Gal says that it comes from his obsession with music.

The multi-talented designer takes his passion for jazz music and translates its structure, harmony, rhythm and melody into furniture design. It may sound like an unlikely source for inspiration, but Gal reveals that it’s something that happens more often than you would think. “There’s structure in music and similarly, there’s structure in design. It’s extremely common.

The rhythm and the beats of a piece of music relates to the tension between straight lines sharp angles and soft curves.” It becomes clear that the rolling thickness of the Leaf pieces can be compared to the ebb and flow of soundwaves, or that the horizontal and vertical lines of the Leaf shelf looks like the lines of musical score.

“The human condition doesn’t want everything to be consistent: it shouldn’t be too strict or too rigid. I hope people can see this when they look at my furniture. There’s a story to tell and I hope it’s something that people will remember in time.”
