From the kitchen to the bathroom, the Scandinavian influence is as much a lifestyle as it is a look. The couple who live here wanted a simple, organised Scandi-style home that focused on functionality. The transformation begins with this open-plan kitchen that runs seamlessly into the living area. “It is the result of hacking the walls separating the service yard and the storeroom before re-structuring to enlarge the space,” says Aaron Poh of AP Concepts. “The woody and white surfaces personify the most basic Scandi design ideals.”

On the floor, here and throughout the home is Evo High-End Resilient Flooring by Evorich, an eco-friendly material that’s termite-proof, waterproof and high fire-resistant. Meanwhile, the kitchen and dining countertops are clad with EDL Compact, which is resistant to moisture, heat, scratch and stains. Since the couple eat most meals at the dining counter, the dining table is reserved for guests.

The foyer is located on the other side of the kitchen. As the owners can’t stand clutter, Aaron fully maximised this space by installing a full-height storage cabinet for the owners to keep footwear, umbrellas and miscellaneous items. This fixture is also equipped with a bench and mirror, and cleverly conceals the electrical box which would otherwise be an eyesore.

To jazz up the mostly wood-based features in the living room, Aaron introduced a light grey sofa with coloured throw cushions and an off-white rug that lend an exceptionally sunny, comfortable vibe. New features include the recessed cabinets below the windows, a half-height feature wall for the TV, and false ceilings to conceal overhead wiring.

Previously a bedroom, this space now functions as a walk-in wardrobe and study. “At first, we wanted to build the wardrobe by the bathroom, but the idea of having no privacy in the bedroom was a turn-off to the couple. Instead, we positioned the bed behind the wardrobe wall, so the sleeping area can’t be seen,” Aaron explains. The wardrobe is 15ft wide and the wife’s dressing space includes a cabinet for jewellery and other accessories.

“I brought Scandinavia into this bright and airy master bathroom with white and natural wood tones,” says Aaron. The original design had unsightly sewage pipes, which has now been concealed. “What you see now is soft overhead lighting that lends a sense of calm to the space – perfect for de-stressing,” Aaron adds. The hard-wearing tiles also tie in with the Scandi look. For consistency, the vanity countertop is clad with EDL Compact so it doesn’t appear bulky.

The common bathroom near the kitchen is radically different from the master bathroom. Although the flooring is similar, the wall tiles are grey. For contrast, the sewage pipe dons a handsome black shade, as with all the bathroom accessories and vanity. As this bathroom would be used by guests, the owners wanted something easier to maintain. The overall result, though, is a beautifully coordinated and functional home for the young couple.
